"The Great Place..."
We've arrived at Fort Hood.... shortly after we landed our blackhawks at the airfield a Captain walked up and greeted us and said, "Welcome to the Great Place". I just recently learned that's what they call Fort Hood. How they came up with this saying I have no idea,... I'm still looking for anything that resembles greatness and I have a sneaking suspicion I'll be searching for awhile. We are less than two months from being in Afghanistan. I am no longer a resident of Austin, Texas. I already can't remember the last time I slept in my own bed and I already miss the simple things of life back home. No more wearing a suit to work and picking up breakfast at the cafe downstairs or heading over to Town Lake for a run after work. No more hanging out with friends or walking down to West 6th for a drink or to watch the game. For now, it's back to living like I did when I first joined the Army... Bunk beds, wall lockers, a DFAC (dining facility), formations, rules that don't make sense and passing the time thinking of home and telling stories.
