A day with family & friends...

Today was family day... And although I didn't have any official family in attendance I did have an old friend of mine (Jack Harrison) who just happened to be in Destin FL for the week on vacation with his family. Jack was my credit officer from the days I used to work at Dell in Austin.  Jack brought his two boys and another guy (a friend of one of his sons).  I'm not sure who enjoyed it more.  Them watching me fly around the stage-field in a helicopter, or me getting to watch them experience their first rotary wing "air-show".  O.k. it wasn't really an "air-show"… more like an "air-slow" but for my flight school buddies and our familes it was the kind of like one.  Hard to believe Jack and I have been friends for over 10 years now.  We both eventually left Dell and went on to do "other things".  But, we have remained friends even though our professional careers have gone in different directions.  It was a humbling day too.  Jack and his boys were pretty impressed.  They seemed amazed whenever I would rattle off things about the TH-67 (Bell 206B Jet Ranger).  It was a good day.  Later on that evening I received the following message from  Jack,…. "Awesome stuff!  I have always thought that it is the place of parents to be 'proud' and friends to be 'happy' for other friends accomplishments.  I can't help it though because I am very proud of your accomplishments and happy for you too.  Thank you for having us today."

What I've learned at Army flight school (so far)

1.  I still don't know what N1 topping is…
2.  There are guys that will compete with you whether you want to or not.
3.  When temperature and dew point are close it really can produce fog
4.  The Air Force probably has a better snack bar at their airfield
5.  If you're ever in a helicopter and your headset doesn't work… make sure it's plugged in to the right headphone jack and not your co-pilot's.
6.  Air conditioning is one of the best inventions ever, but it still doesn't cool things down very well in Alabama
7.  Flying helicopters is much harder than flying airplanes
8.  I don't like morning flight-line
9.  I may be old, but the instructor pilots are a lot older.
10. Texas is better than Alabama
