Instruments… OVER!

Today was my instrument checkride.  I passed and scored about were I expected I would.  My classmates and I spent the last two months learning how to fly without using any outside visual references.  This concept would never work in a vehicle but in the world of aviation it's a very useful and commonly used method of flying when the weather makes it difficult and/or impossible to see where you're going.  It's a very useful skill and I'm glad the Army makes the time to provide us with this training.

So, we say farewell to the mighty TH-67 Creek and move on to the OH-58 Kiowa.  The Kiowa as far as I can tell is very similar to the TH-67 but apparently it's different.  I guess I'll blog about that later when I learn more.  It felt nice to turn in my checklist and flight training guide.  I'm not going to miss that little helicopter.

The next phase of training is BWS.  Basic Warfighting Skills.  During this phase of training we'll learn things like,… tactical mission planning/communication, fundamentals of reconnaissance and aircrew coordination.  The part I'm most excited about is flying NOE (nap of the earth) along rivers and streams and darting in and out of RT's (remote training sites?).  This is the part where we get to learn how to fly like an Army Aviator.  I'm really looking forward to moving on to the next phase.  I only have about 4-5 months left of training.  Everyday here at Fort Rucker brings me one day closer to getting back to Texas.  I'm more than halfway done now.  Never thought I would ever get this opportunity.  I'm so grateful to have been blessed with this opportunity.  I'm learning a lot about myself, I'm becoming a better and more experienced pilot, and I'm getting to meet guys (and gals) that I'll be working/flying with for the rest of my Army career.  It's something special for sure.  BWS… here I come!
